Standards Based Report Cards

The Bentworth School District will begin to use a Standards-Based Report Card (SBRC) at the elementary level for Kindergarten - 4th Grade. This is an exciting step for our school as we work towards ensuring all students are successful at meeting the new PA Core Standards.

PA Core Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subjects, and this new report card is designed to give parents more and better information about how their children are progressing.

On the report card, parents will learn whether or not their child has Mastered the skill, has Developed the skill, but has yet to master, is Emerging in the skill or is Below the standard required. Attached to the report card will be a set of grade level learning objectives that your child will need to master for the current nine weeks. These learning objectives will be sent home at the beginning of the nine weeks so you will know the expectations and then at the end of the nine weeks with their report card so you are able to see what they were able to master. The report card will also provide information on the students work habits and Dibel’s scores.

This new report card is helpful in multiple ways. First, it will ensure there is more consistency of expectations from teacher to teacher. Second, it will help teachers and students focus on the standards from the very beginning of the year, giving students a chance to get help sooner if they are not making adequate progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, parents will learn exactly how their students are doing based on the standards—they’ll learn which big ideas and concepts their children have learned and what they need to work on to ensure they are ready for the next grade level.

Mastered - The student demonstrates consistent understanding and application of skills and concepts taught in class. The student is consistently on target for meeting established end-of-year, grade level learning objective. It is not anticipated students will receive “Master” in all areas of the report card as many skills and concepts are revisited over the course of a year to support consistent understanding and application.

Developing -The student demonstrates understanding and application of skills and concepts taught in class. The student requires more exposure or practice to fully demonstrate consistent understanding and application. A mark of developing is expected and often occurs when a new concept or skill is introduced.

Emerging - The student has begun to emerge in the concept/skill. A great deal of additional practice in this concept/skill is needed to demonstrate mastery.

Below - The student consistently requires assistance to demonstrate understanding and/or application of skills and concepts taught in class. The student may benefit from work that is adapted or from differentiated instruction in order to demonstrate better understanding or application of skills and concepts.
